Walter Gropius (1883-1969) gehört als Begründer des Bauhauses zu den Ikonen der Architektur des 20. Jahrhunderts. Während die frühen Bauten in Pommern noch stark von seinem Lehrer Peter Behrens geprägt waren, gelangte er über eine expressionistische, das Handwerk betonende Phase schließlich zur geometrischen Abstraktion. Er arbeitete dabei stets mit anderen Architekten zusammen und gründete in den USA das Kollektiv The Architects Collaborative.
